Esi sounds very interesting and well spoken but what I'm tripping on is how being bootilicious has become wrong. having a hips and ass means you're ugly? smh.

I've noticed that trim or plastic girls are always 'trying' to be beautiful than all other forms of females! I grew up in Nigeria and now live in Ghana. As a young boy, I read the Enid Blyton books (Secret Seven and Famous Five) and watched the series too! We had some local authors and books which I enjoyed (Chike and the River, Johhny Ojo's School Days"), then who could miss the Pacesetters series...everything from Evbu My Love to the Black Temple, to Christmas in the City.

At some point, I started reading James Hadley Chase Novels when I found a copy with a non-judgmental cover. Thats when I realized that you really should not judge a book by its cover and I proceeded to read as many of the JHC books I could lay my hands on.

Then who can forget Jeffrey Archer, Sidney Sheldon and many of the contemporary authors we have all come to love. African writers are making a comeback so Chimamanda Adichie has my vote as does Ben Okri, Elechi Amadi, Myne Whitman, Sefi Atta, Segun Afolabi and many others whose books I pick up everytime I walk into a bookstore.

I must also confess that I have become a Kindle addict and now make a lot of purchases that way. I also think that e-books is a great way for African authors to gain outreach beyond the countries they write from! The young ladies are taught how to achieve academic success and to be the best in everything. They are also groomed to be highly independent. Some are perceived as snobs.

Pride comes before a fall. Many are not willing to compromise or settle for mediocrity. It can be difficult to find the right men to match some of the ladies when they leave university.

Some of them become "masculine" in their outlook and some compete with the men in what is a man's world. That makes their rivals resentful. Some can be inflexible and unwilling to bend or compromise.

They may be high achievers, yet some of them do not have the requisite life skills or cultural understanding to make "good" wives or have sustainable relationships with the typical Ghanaian man who probably wants a less articulate, more subservient woman.

Many of the girls, years after they have left school, are single, single parents, divorced, struggling in unhappy relationships or still searching. That is seen as a flaw in our society where to be seen at social functions without a man constitutes failure. Many women would rather be second or third wives than be on their own.

Some are trail blazers all over the world. There has to be a work/life balance.

I´m a 2 years expat in Ghana and i just step in yo...

I´m a 2 years expat in Ghana and i just step in your blog. I was born and raised in colorado, blonde hair and blue eyes! But this man really attracted me. He is a pure Rastafarian. He has dreads, plays in many bands, teaches at my college and also is an incredible drummer. Everything attracted me too him. He was laid back, his accent, his drumming, his ganja love, his looks, his body, and personality. I will be going to Ghana for a month this summer with him and can not wait to experience the culture since I have became an African dancer here! I have never dated an African American, let alone a rasta. There are culture differences but I do not know what to expect.
